`Jumbo
engines for jumbo ships`.
This is the subject of the CIMAC day on the SMM 2000
in Hamburg, September 28.
`Diesel engine manufacturers have increased the output
per cylinder and reduced specific weights of their engines
while owners and shipyards require
more reliability at lower costs` says the CIMAC
Vice President for Technical Papers in his invitation
letter.

This
Forum should help to reduce the operating risk by more
Diesel Safety, i.e. applying Diesel engine security
measures. The Forum is initiated by reason of the recent
catastrophes happened on large Diesel engines due to
the lack of extended Know-how, concerning the early
recognition of a damage development to ensure a higher
engines disposability due to less repair expenditure.

One
of the most important security measure is the Oil Mist
Detection (OMD). The Forum is intended to bring some
more light on the background of both theory and practice
of Oil Mist Detection (OMD) as well as prevention of
disasters in engine rooms endangering the general reliability.

In
opposite to the destroying property of Oil Mist i.e.
in the form of a crankcase explosion, it is as upcoming
Oil Mist in an early stage even distinguished to indicate
a beginning deficiency in lubrication. The Forum intends
generally to deepen the understanding about these Oil
Mist phenomena.

Furthermore
the Forum shall help the participants to find the experts
Know-how and vice versa to complete the experts knowledge
by the participants information of practise experience
around combustion engines which will be collected, evaluated
and prepared by the experts for the availability to
every Forum page visitor

Invited
to participate in the forum are all individuals on board
and land, in the industry, the experts in research and
classification, development and insurance, students
and especially all people being related to the safe
operation of large Diesel engines regarding the avoidance
of expensive damage often caused by poor lubrication
problems.

The
Forum's launch will be on September 26, 2000 on the
occasion of the SMM 2000 International Trade Fair in
